Atrial septal defect (ASD) is the second most common congenital heart defect after ventricular septal defects (VSDs) and the most common to become symptomatic in adulthood. They are characterized by an abnormal opening in the atrial septum allowing communication between the right and left atria.

Patent foramen ovale or small atrial septal defect? Red colour encodes flow towards the transducer at the top and hence a flow from left atrium (LA) to right atrium (RA). Whether it has to be called a small atrial septal defect (ASD) or a patent foramen ovale (PFO) is the question. We report a case of 44-year-old female patient with congenital heart disease, ostium secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) with moderate mitral regurgitation for minimally invasive ASD repair along with mitral valve repair.

The entire septum should be examined as the probe is withdrawn until the SCV is seen entering the RA and then advanced until the IVC is seen entering the RA. A secundum atrial septal defect is diagnosed on transthoracic echocardiography. Ostium Primum ASD is easily diagnosed in fetal echocardiography, while secundum ASD is virtually impossible to diagnose prenatally due to physiologically open vieussens valve through foramen ovale in fetus.

[ [Image: |Video]] 2015-08-01 · These include the type of ASD (primum or secundum) or other atrial communication (venosus or unroofed coronary sinus), the presence and direction of Doppler flow through the defect, and associated findings such as anomalous pulmonary vein drainage, the presence and size of an eustachian valve or a Chiari network, the size and shape of the defect or defects, the location in the septum, the presence or absence of multiple fenestrations, and the size of the ASD at end-systole and end Atrial septal defects (ASDs) represent nonphysiological communication between two atria with an approximate incidence of 1 in 1500 live births, thus accounting for approximately 8%–10% of congenital heart defects.
