Shear wave testing, also known as angle beam inspection, is an ultrasonic testing technique used primarily for weld inspections. A probe consisting of an ultrasonic transducer coupled with a plastic or epoxy wedge introduces an ultrasonic beam at an angle into a test area.

• Occurs when a longitudinal wave hits an interface at an angle to surface (not perpendicular) – a shear wave is formed • When the angle of refraction of the longitudinal wave becomes 90 degrees, the angle of incidence is called the 1 Shear Wave Probes Single Shear Wave / Angle Beam direct contact probes. Ideal for general purpose testing of Welds, Plates, Pipes / Tubing, Castings and Forgings; Thicker shoes available for extended life Contoured contact face available to match convex and concave testing surfaces. Standard Angles are 38, 45, 60 and 70 Degrees Shear Wave Dual Transducers are dual element transducers with high near surface resolution, ideal for detecting small, near surface cracks and weld inspection. Potted in durable cast housing, the transducers are available in a variety of angles, including 45°, 60° or 70°, for producing the required shear waves. Group Participation Exercises in the Setup for Shear Wave Calibration for 45°, 60°, & 70° NDT Technical Services, Inc. P.O. Box 721139. Houston, Texas 77272-1139. Shear waves are different from longitudinal waves in terms of several characteristics including wavelength, oscillation mode, velocity, and attenuation.

Shear-wave images are automatically coregistered with standard B-mode images to provide quantitative color elastograms with anatomic specificity. Shear waves propagate faster through stiffer contracted tissue, as well as along the long axis of tendon and muscle.

PHASED ARRAY ULTRASOUND Ultrasonic Phased Array is an advanced non-destructive testing method that produces real time S- Scans (Sectorial Scans) as well as traditional A-Scans to provide full volumetric weld quality data with heightened accuracy. Generally, using shear waves allows you to detect smaller discontinuities due to their shorter wavelength (as compared to the longitudinal wave).

Generally, using shear waves allows you to detect smaller discontinuities due to their shorter wavelength (as compared to the longitudinal wave). This surface following wave is sometime referred to as a creep wave and it is not very useful in NDT because it dampens out very rapidly. Beyond the first critical angle, only the shear wave propagates into the material. For this reason, most angle beam transducers use a shear wave so that the signal is not complicated by having two waves present. Shear wave testing, also known as angle beam inspection, is an ultrasonic testing technique used primarily for weld inspections. Awkward weld geometry and the presence of a weld crown or bead typically require shear wave testing, which entails placing a probe to the side of a weld and generating beams at an angle toward the weld.
